Shifting urban namescapes: street name politics and toponymic change in a Romanian(ised) city

Abstract Street names express the spatial materialisation of nominative discourses articulated and deployed by the powerful in their politicisation of the urban landscape with self-legitimising ideological values, political symbols and historical narratives. Using an approach grounded upon the theoretical principles of critical toponymies, this paper sets out a longitudinal perspective on the politics of street nomenclature in Hermannstadt/Sibiu (Romania). The article is devoted to a pending matter in the Latvian linguistics and methodology of language and literature – the formation of the system of terminology. The 90-ies of the 20th century when Latvia gained its national independence brought changes not only in the political and economic life but also in the terminology because new realities, which appeared in life, needed new names. Present participles in the new Gothic palimpsest

A new Gothic text has recently been discovered and it is contained in a palimpsest bifolium of the Archive of the Board of Trustees of San Petronio’s Basilica in Bologna. Two scholars of Milan, R. Bianca Finazzi and Paola Tornaghi, have studied the palimpsest. The author received their paper directly from the two colleagues, who had received word of the interest the discovery of the new Gothic text had kindled in him. Subject case alternation in negated existential, locative, and possessive clauses in Latvian

 The goal of this article is to analyse the alternation between the genitive and nominative cases in Latvian. As the alternation between genitive and nominative cases is possible in all clauses in which the verb būt ‘to be’ is used as an independent verb, this article examines existential, locative, and also possessive clauses, while also demonstrating that distinguishing these clause types is problematic for Latvian utilising the criteria given in the linguistic literature.
